In chapter 22 of The Theory of Poker, David Sklansky explains how reading opponents’ hands is central to applying the Fundamental Theorem of Poker: the closer you get to playing as if you knew their cards, the more money you save and win over time.


Why Hand Reading Matters

  • If you always knew your opponents’ exact holdings, you would almost never make a strategic mistake.

  • Since perfect knowledge is impossible, the goal is to approximate it as closely as you can.

  • The better you read hands:

    • The fewer times you make big errors (calling when you’re crushed, folding when you’re good).

    • The more accurately you make fine-grained decisions (thin value bets, disciplined folds, well-timed bluffs).

Hand-reading is both:

  • Art – knowing people and their tendencies.

  • Science – logically combining betting action, visible cards, and probabilities.


The “Art” Side: Knowing Your Opponents

Before you can use logic and math effectively, you need to understand how each opponent plays:

  • Do they raise strong hands early or slowplay?

  • Do they raise draws?

  • Do they frequently semi-bluff?

  • How often do they bluff on the end?

  • How do they play big hands across multiple streets?

You learn this best not only from pots you play, but by carefully watching hands you are not in.

Weak, Good, and Tough Players

  • Weak players

    • Play inconsistently and irrationally; their actions don’t follow clear patterns.

    • Harder to “read” precisely, but easier to beat by solid, patient play.

  • Good players

    • Bet, check, and raise for logical reasons.

    • Easier to put on ranges and specific lines.

  • Very tough players

    • Intentionally mix up their play: semi-bluffs, tricky raises, delayed aggression, slowplays, deceptive “normal” lines.

    • Harder to read because they try to obscure their hand while you’re trying to decode it.


The Core Technique: Combine Action + Visible Cards

In open-handed games (stud, razz, hold’em), and even in closed games, there are two universal tools:

  1. Interpret betting actions

    • Every bet, check, raise, or call says something about strength, weakness, or plans.

  2. Use exposed cards (and their order)

    • In stud-type games, you track:

      • What upcards appeared,

      • In what order,

      • And how your opponent’s aggression matched those cards.

You:

  1. Start with a range of possible hands your opponent could have.

  2. As you see more cards and actions, you eliminate some possibilities.

  3. By the river/last card, you have a much narrower, likely range—sometimes even a specific hand.

Avoid Early Tunnel Vision

It is usually a mistake to lock in on one exact hand too early:

  • A raise on third street with a king showing in stud might mean:

    • Two kings,

    • A smaller pair with a high kicker,

    • A three-flush,

    • Or a connected high hand like J-Q-K.

  • You should maintain a set of candidates, refining them as the hand progresses.


Forward + Backward Hand Reading

Sklansky emphasizes two complementary directions:

1. Forward Reasoning

  • Start from the beginning of the hand:

    • Preflop/third street actions,

    • Followed by bets/raises and catches on later streets.

  • Continuously update what’s still possible based on each new action and card.

2. Backward Reasoning

  • Start from the current action (often on the end), then look backward:

    • “Given that he suddenly bet when this last card hit, what previous line of play is consistent with that?”

  • Example:

    • River brings a small card and someone who was passive now bets.

    • You ask: “Could he really have called all the way with the kind of hand that this river supposedly completed? If not, this bet is more likely a bluff or some other value hand.”

You use both directions together: forward to narrow the range, backward to cross-check whether the final action fits the earlier story.


Reading Hands on the End: Bluff, Good, or Great?

On the final betting round, when someone bets:

  • It usually represents either:

    • A bluff,

    • A good hand, or

    • A very strong hand.

  • Mediocre hands often check because:

    • They are not strong enough for value.

    • They are too strong to bluff with and too weak to bet confidently.

So with your own hand:

  • If you have something mediocre and face a bet, you ask:

    • “How often is this a bluff vs. the pot odds?”

  • If you have a strong but non-nut hand, you ask:

    • “Is he more likely to have a normal made hand or a monster?”

    • This affects whether you should raise, just call, or possibly even fold.


Using Mathematics to Refine Hand Reads

When you can narrow your opponent to a small menu of possible hands, you can bring in math:

  • Evaluate the probability of each candidate hand based on:

    • Card distribution (how often such a hand is dealt),

    • Any public cards seen (e.g., fewer kings left in the deck),

    • What you know about your opponent’s opening/raising requirements.

Typical uses:

  • In draw poker:

    • If someone raises only with trips or better, how often is it:

      • Two pair vs. trips?

    • You compare these frequencies to understand what your set or full house needs to beat.

  • In hold’em:

    • If a tight player raises preflop only with AA, KK, or AK:

      • You can compare statistical frequencies of those combinations.

      • This helps decide whether a hand like QQ should call, re-raise, or fold.

  • In stud:

    • If someone with a king upcard raises, and you know they only:

      • Raise with either K Kx or a three-flush,

    • You can estimate how often each is likely given unseen cards and visible kings on the table.

This is essentially an application of Bayes-style reasoning: conditional probabilities based on both card frequencies and observed behavior.


Multi-Way Pots and Overcalls

Hand-reading changes significantly when there are other players still in:

  • When one player bets and another calls, your chance of being up against a bluff drops sharply.

  • The caller must have something worthwhile to continue.

  • That means:

    • Hands that were barely worth a heads-up call may not be worth an overcall.

    • You lose the “maybe he’s bluffing” equity, because they can’t both be bluffing.

Similarly, for cold-calling raises:

  • In many games, you need a stronger hand to call a raise cold than you would need to make that raise yourself.

  • Example:

    • You raise in draw with a certain minimum standard (say, aces up).

    • If a player with similar standards raises before you act, that same “minimum raising hand” of yours may now be insufficient even to call.

    • Their raise implies a distribution skewed toward stronger holdings.

Chapter 22 ties together many earlier ideas and shows how they depend on reading hands well:

  • Hand-reading is vital because it lets you approximate perfect play.

  • You build reads by:

    • Understanding opponent tendencies (art),

    • Interpreting actions and visible cards (logic),

    • And sometimes using card-distribution math (science).

  • You:

    • Start with a range,

    • Eliminate possibilities as the hand progresses,

    • Cross-check final actions against earlier play,

    • Factor in pot size, position, and number of opponents,

    • And then choose the line (bet, call, raise, fold) with the best long-term expectation.

Ultimately, the better you are at reading hands, the more effectively you can apply every other concept in the book.
